Typhlodromus occidentalis (mite control)

Typhlodromus occidentalis is a predatory mite that attacks spider mites, particularly two-spotted mite (Tetranychus urticae). T. occidentalis is well adapted to hot, dry climates and is tolerant of many organophospate insecticides.

Tips on releasing:

  • Do not use residual pesticides 2 weeks before release.
  • Release T. occidentalis from summer to autumn.
  • Release at first sign of mite damage, or into known hotspots prior to mite damage occurring in October/November.
  • A second release is recommended 4 weeks later.
  • Where mite levels are already high, a selective miticide may be necessary to reduce pest mite populations before introducing T. occidentalis.
  • Phytoseilus persimilis predatory mites are recommended in greenhouse environments that are mild and humid.
