Aphytis melinus (Red Scale control)

Aphytis melinus is a parasite of armoured scale insects, particularly Red Scale in citrus.

Aphytis is a tiny wasp that lays eggs under the scale cover. The developing larvae feed on the scale insects and kill them, eventually emerging as another adult wasp.

Tips on releasing:

  • Aphytis should be released annually in spring/summer/autumn.
  • Do not use residual pesticides for 4 weeks before or after release. Reintroduce parasites after toxic sprays have been used.
  • Multiple releases may be required in some blocks with a history of scale problems, or where parasites have not previously been released.
  • Where oil has been applied delay release for 2 weeks.
  • In hot conditions release on the shady side of the tree; in cool weather release on the sunny side of trees.
