Aphidius colemani (Aphid control)

Aphidius colemani is a parasitic wasp that attacks over 40 species of aphids including two of the most serious pests, the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, and the melon or cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii.

Aphidius colemani can maintain very low levels of aphids when released regularly at low rates, but does not respond fast enough to "treat" an aphid outbreak. It is therefore critical to release Aphidius into the greenhouse in anticipation to aphids, or at the first sign of aphids. Aphidius can also be released into field crops to start the parasitoid population building earlier than would occur naturally.

Tips on releasing:

  • Do not use residual pesticides for 4 weeks prior to release.
  • Release before aphids become a problem.
  • Release low rates weekly for prevention or 2-3 applications at higher rates if aphids are already present.
  • Compatible with aphid predators such as lacewings and lady bird beetles.
